Indianapolis waited four years for the return of the BMW Championship, and golf fans once again had to show great patience on the opening day. A long rain delay made it impossible to complete round one before darkness set in. However, Roberto Castro (-7) appeared fully unaffected by the interruption, as he fired an opening round of 65 to move to the top of the leaderboard.

The American, who narrowly missed out on his first PGA TOUR win in a play-off at this season’s Wells Fargo Championship, added a further three birdies after the rain delay to the five he carded prior to play being suspended. Only on the 18th green did he eventually drop his first shot. Castro is one of 33 players who were able to complete their opening round at Crooked Stick Golf Club today.

Just one shot behind Castro in second place is Brian Harman (USA, -6), who remained bogey-free on Thursday. He is followed by 2010 BMW Champion Dustin Johnson (USA), 2013 PGA Champion Jason Dufner (USA), and Chris Kirk (USA, all -5).

Defending champion and world number one Jason Day (+1) was unable to follow on from last year’s spectacular performance, when he opened with a round of ten under par to lay the foundation for a stunning victory in Chicago. The Australian did manage to complete his round and is currently tied in 51st.

Four years ago, Rory McIlroy emerged victorious when Indianapolis hosted the BMW Championship for the first time – having won the Deutsche Bank Championship the previous week. This season, the Northern Irishman once again arrives at the BMW Championship as the winner of the second Playoff tournament – and history could yet repeat itself: after ten holes, the world number three is well positioned in tenth place on three under par.

Round one will resume at 08:00 on Friday, while round two tees off at 10:00.
